Welcome to the North East of England.
Angel of the North.
.jpg)
The Angel of the North is now as instantly recognisable as the Tyne
Bridge, as a symbol of the North East. The Angel of the North was designed
by Anthony Gormley in 1998.
The Angel is a steel sculpture, that stands to 20 metres tall, and
has a 'wingspan' of 54 metres. Weighing in at over 200 tons, the statue
is seen by almost 100,000 people a day, mainly motorists. It is anchored
to a depth of over 60 feet, to be able to withstand winds of over 100
mph. Although the wings look flat, they are in fact slightly arched
forward, as if to embrace all who see her.
Located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, the statue looks out above the
main A1 road, and isthe first sign for locals who have been away that
tells them they are home.
