Hadrian's Wall in the North of England.

Hadrians Wall is without any doubt the jewel in the crown of the histocal North East of England. Hadrian's wall was built on the orders of the Roman emperor Hadrian, between 122ad and 127ad, and it spanned from the Solway Firth in the west to Wallsend in Newcastle on the River Tyne.

Although it was built as a barrier between the Picts (the Scottish) in the north, the wall which showed the frontier of the Roman Empire is actually between 9 miles and 68 miles south of Scotland, depending from which point it is measured.

Different ares along the wall we were built not only from stone, but also from cut blocks of turf. Hadrian's Wall spanned a distance somwhere between 70 and 85 miles in length, and had built therein milecastles and/or forts. The wall in places measured up to 6 metres wide and 6m tall.

The importance of Hadrian's Wall was recognised in 1987 when it was made a Unesco world heritage site.

We viewed the wall from Walltown Crags, and the views are absolutely tremendous.
