Northumberland, Chesterholm, Vindolanda Roman Garrison July 2007

Northumberland, Chesterholm, A part of the Vindolanda Roman Garrison - July 2007.

Vindolanda Roman Fort is located at Chesterholm in Northumberland, south of Hadrian's Wall, and is now most famous for the discovery of the 'shopping list' tablets discovered there, which have been so important in helping scholars discover more about Roman life in Britain.

I was told that the archaeology will take another 100 years to complete, a daunting task, but evidently they intend on getting it right. It is quite an extensive site, with an indoor museum showing some of the finds, and models of how it might once have looked. See for yourself the shoes, jewllery, coins and tools that the Archaeologists have found.

The site is in remarkably good condition and in an excellent state of preservation, especially when you imagine it is between 1700 and 1900 years old.

At one time this must have been an important Roman garrison, with accommodation for many soldiers and civilians.
